Promoting gender equality and equal opportunities is a core priority for the University of Cologne, the Medical Faculty, and SFB 1607. We are committed to ensuring gender balance in all positions filled within this research consortium.

All participating institutions and researchers recognize gender equality, family-friendliness, and work‒life balance as fundamental values. Our commitment is reflected across all career stages and follows three main approaches:

  • Gender equality initiatives to support equal representation in academia
  • Unconscious bias training to foster an inclusive and fair work environment
  • Family support programs to help researchers balance career and family responsibilities

We are proud that 37.5% of our project leaders are female, including an impressive 55% female junior PIs. In our first funding period, we set out to achieve at least 50% female staff among all PhD students and PostDocs across our projects—and we exceeded this goal, reaching 69%. We continue to prioritize diversity and inclusivity to create an equitable academic environment for all.

SFB 1607 is embedded in the structured diversity and equal opportunity programs of the University of Cologne, which has been a leader in implementing gender mainstreaming strategies for over two decades. The UoC Equal Opportunities Strategy Program provides tailored initiatives for every stage of academic qualification, aiming to raise awareness, shift institutional culture, and increase diversity in academia—especially the proportion of women in research.

To ensure all measures towards career and family support and equality within SFB 1607 are fully implemented, a Gender Board Committee has been established. This committee currently consists of:
