Project: Z04
The SFB’s Integrated Research Training Group combines various structured graduate programs.
At SFB 1607, we are dedicated to shaping the future of ophthalmology and vision science by fostering the next generation of researchers. Through Project Z04, the Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG), we offer a comprehensive platform for early-career scientists, including graduate and undergraduate students from the Faculties of Medicine and Natural Sciences.
Our mission is to equip students with a broad range of skills and expertise necessary for thriving careers in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The IRTG focuses on translational training across several key areas, including:
- Ophthalmology
- Eye Research
- Ocular Inflammation
- Lymphangiogenesis
Through a collaborative network of basic researchers, clinician scientists and clinicians, we ensure that our graduates are well-prepared for the international and national job markets in ophthalmology, ocular vascular diseases and inflammatory diseases—in both basic and translational research.
Join Our Training & Events
Our training platform is designed to offer hands-on experience and valuable learning opportunities. As part of the IRTG, you will have access to a variety of interactive workshops and training sessions, including:
- Wetlab workshops
- Surgical skills training
- Cell culture workshops
- Imaging techniques
In addition to these specialized workshops, we provide opportunities for industry and clinic rotations, giving you real-world experience and insights into the applied side of research. We also offer patent training to help students develop skills in intellectual property and commercialization.
A highlight of our program is the Summer School planned for 2026, which will provide an intensive program with expert lectures, practical sessions, and excellent networking opportunities.
Check out our upcoming workshops and lectures in our event calendar to stay up-to-date with exciting events.
Awards and Recognition
We have established several key awards to recognize exceptional achievements throughout our program. At our upcoming retreats, Poster Awards will be presented to outstanding participants. Additionally, at the end of the first funding period in 2027, we will honor the best PhD and MD theses with special awards, celebrating the achievements of our graduates.
For students looking to advance their careers, we offer a variety of fellowship opportunities for both PhD and MD students. These fellowships are designed to support early-stage research and provide additional resources for students embarking on impactful scientific careers.
